Product Description
Hennessy Hammock Expedition Series
The Expedition is the hammock that started the hammock camping revolution and is still the favourite all-purpose Hennessy Hammock—great for backpacking, family camping, expeditions, kayaking, motorcycling, and any other purposes which require comfort and durability.
The Classic model has an ingenious entrance through the bottom that snaps closed automatically under the weight of your body and seals with velcro. Mosquitos can’t figure out how you disappeared standing outside your hammock and magically re-appeared lying comfortably inside.
The Zip model has a side entrance with a full length heavy duty YKK zipper and two double sliders. The mesh can be held open with an elastic so you can watch the stars on clear, bug free nights.
The Jungle Expedition Zip has a double layer bottom with 40d nylon for 100% mosquito protection and to hold the Heat-Reflecting DoubleBubble Pad between the layers and on the correct diagonal. One of the nicest things about the Jungle models is climbing into your hammock with your sleeping bag and not having to think about keeping an insulation pad from moving around under you during the night.
The double bottom jungle models are designed for temperatures down to 40*F / 4*C. when used with the accessory Heat-Reflecting DoubleBubble Pad.
A Complete Shelter System
The Hennessy Hammock is a legendary piece of camping and survival equipment and has been the choice of epic expeditions exploring the full length of the Nile, Amazon and Congo Rivers, up to the Arctic, down into the deepest caves on Earth, and other extreme environments around the world. Every Hennessy is a complete, engineered shelter system. Built tough for years of service, every hammock is uncompromising in materials and workmanship.
All Hennessys include webbing straps, tightly woven fabrics and high quality support ropes, a matching detachable rainfly, a "no see um" mosquito mesh, a gear loft on the ridge line and a stuff sack with set up instructions on the back. Built tough for years of service, all of our support ropes and webbing straps are six times stronger than the weight rating of the hammock.
We believe it is essential to include complementary webbing straps with each hammock to prevent damage to the tender bark of small trees. The Hennessy Hammock has almost zero impact and is an excellent example of a “Leave No Trace” shelter.
Asymmetrical Design
Experience a level of comfort on the trail almost as good as your bed at home and maybe even better. The patented asymmetrically shaped hammock supports your back and knees like a quality contoured mattress off the ground.
Amazingly Comfortable
Tall or large campers and campers with injuries, sore joints, bone spurs or back pain tell us about finding their first night of comfortable camping in many years with the larger Explorer Deluxe or Safari Deluxe models. You will wake up in the morning feeling great. Some owners of Hennessy Hammocks claim that they come home from their adventure feeling better than when they left. Some report that they tossed out their beds when they got home from a hike and set up their hammock in the house.
- It's a shelter that takes the pain out of the outdoors and protects the environment.
- Extend your seasonal use by adding accessory insulation systems.
- Countless tiny improvements over 40 years of effort and design.

Unique Bottom EntryPatented entrance on the bottom automatically snaps closed under the weight of your body and seals with velcro. The "Classic" bottom entry works great when you are being followed by a cloud of mosquitoes. When you duck your head down to open the bottom entrance, the mosquitoes don't know what you're doing, so they get out of the way for a few seconds. Before they know what's happened, the door has snapped shut and you are on the inside and they are on the outside. |
Side Zipper EntryZips closed with a full length, heavy duty #10 YKK zipper on one side between the mesh and the bottom fabric. One advantage of the zip model is that it's a little easier to set up your bedding but the mosquitoes also find it easier follow you in and join you for a snack later, so double check for intruders before you zip up for the night. |
Evolved HammocksHennessy Hammock is a small family run company whose only mission is to continually improve the evolution of hammock design. The inventor, Tom Hennessy, has been sleeping in hammocks for over 60 years and experimenting with designs for over 40 years. He made over 50 prototypes and beta-tested his designs for six years before getting patents and going into production. (EU pat.1463426-16, US patents US20090165205A1, US6865757B2) |
Thoughtful DetailsTriangular Mesh Gear Pocket, Glove Hooks, Carabiner Loops, and included Webbing Straps. A nifty gear pocket slides on the ridgeline and stores out of sight behind your head. Two glove hooks are also threaded on the ridgeline and can be used for attaching LED lights and even attaching a drink can by the hole in the pull tab. All hammocks ridge lines are installed with a loop on each inside hammock end to which a small carabiner can be hooked to hold daypacks, water bottles, and other small items which are too heavy to hang over the ridge line. |

Anyway, from the first night, I was very pleased. I don't sleep well camping, usually. Either I have trouble getting my pad right (mine is a little slippery, I guess), or finding a decent clear and level spot for a tent, or something. I also never really liked the light-weight mummy bags; I always feel confined. With this hammock and my usual confining light-weight sleeping bag, though, I was very comfortable. Heck, I slept like a baby.
Setup was really simple, and being in BC I never had a problem finding trees. I'm not terrific with knots; I used the recommended lash to hang it and had no trouble, though. I also really appreciated the bottom entry after some initial doubts; it's definitely the best approach. I really appreciated how easy it is to get in and drop my shoes right below without getting grit or water inside. I was able to get comfortable in a variety of positions, too. I mostly slept on my back, a bit diagonal (like they recommend), but I also slept just fine on my side one night. My light bag, which usually really bugs me on the ground, was just fine in the hammock. For some reason I just didn't feel all confined like I usually do.
We had some rain on the trip (it is the Northwest) but I was completely dry the whole time with the basic included rain fly. Quick setup, too; I was out of the rain quickest of our group. It didn't get too cold - maybe 50 F, so I don't know how it is in the cold. I was never bothered by either hot or cold though. I think with the right sleeping bag and maybe some insulation you could get right down to freezing without a problem. Warmer clothes and you could go lower.
There are some drawbacks; it's not really private, for one. It's not BAD, but people are going to be able to see in from some angles if they want to. It's still relatively. It's also just a bit of a challenge to change clothes or climb into a sleeping bag, though that might be better with practice. There's a little bit of storage inside, but most of your stuff is going to be outside. In my case, I just hung my dry bags from some webbing wrapped on the tree at my feet for easy access.
It packs up quickly and in a really small bundle. I was able to get it into a 20-liter dry bag with my sleeping bag, a tarp (just in case) and a couple of stakes for the side lines (when there weren't trees or something to tie to). I'm thinking that with this hammock I could probably do multi-day backpacking trips with just a decent-sized daypack.
So after a week of use, I highly recommend it. It improved my camping experience tremendously. It's very high quality, very well designed, and just about the perfect way to sleep outdoors.
I received the Hennessy Hammock in its stuff sack, which has the directions for hanging and use of the hammock printed on the back. My scale read 2.75 lbs. - exactly the advertised weight. The diagram on the stuff sack that shows how to tie the knot that holds the spectra rope at the end of the hammock to the webbing strap that goes around the tree was unclear to me. I couldn't figure out how to tie the knot, so I consulted a guy I know who has a Hennessy Hammock and he showed me how to tie the knot. I believe there is a video of how to tie the knot on Hennessy's website as well as on YouTube, in case you don't know anyone that can show you firsthand.
Once I had learned how to hang the hammock properly and practiced putting it up a couple of times, it was time to go on a backpacking trip and test it in the wilderness. I packed up the new hammock and did sections two and three of the Appalachian Trail in Georgia. On day one, we didn't start out until about 12:30, so we didn't get all the way to where we wanted to camp for the night before we were hit by a terrible thunderstorm about an hour before dark. Ironically, we decided to stop at a place called the Slaughter Creek tent site, halfway up Blood Mountain to wait out the deadly storm (What were we thinking?). I barely had time to hang the hammock and jump inside when the side of the mountain we were on got blasted by 30 minutes of 50 mph wind, horizontal rain and about 50 lightning strikes all around us. I thought we were goners, but no lightning struck us. I was impressed by the Hennessy Hammock during the storm. There was very little sway, even with such strong wind blowing directly perpendicular to the side of the tarp. The shock cords on the side of the hammock are very effective. Despite the fact that I didn't have time to pitch the tarp so that it was anywhere close to being taught, not very much rain was able to blow through onto me. I mainly got wet from the rain bouncing up off the ground underneath me (a small river formed on the 20 degree slope I was hanging over). At one point, a fairly large limb fell on the tarp, but it bounced right off, causing no damage. When the storm was finally over, I climbed out of the hammock and drew the tarp down tighter and closer to the hammcok sides. It rained about half the night after that, but I didn't get any wetter than I already was.
On night two of the trip, I was able to hang the hammock at the perfect anlge and height and stake it and the tarp correctly. I found that I could lay pretty flat and sleep comfortably if I lay like the directions on the bag said to. During the previous night's storm I had gotten a little too cool (despite it being August), so I stopped by the hostel and store that's at the bottom of the other side of Blood Mountain and bought me a short Z Lite sleeping pad to put in the hammock to sleep on. That did the trick. I stayed warm the next night. While at the store, we learned that the storm had taken their power out. We also saw search planes and helicopters looking for a helicopter that had gone down, presumably due to the high winds.
Overall, I am impressed with the Hennessy Hammock. It's easy to set up and use and it's quite comfortable to sleep in, even if you sleep on your side like I do. It also does well in inclement weather. I would recommend it to anyone who wants a lightwieght, convinient and comfortable shelter for camping and backpacking.

Edit:
Finally got it out and was very impressed with it. Took me a couple tried to get the ropes tied properly, but I found it very easy and got it set up in about 5 minutes the very first time I tried :)
I slept on the beat and was exposed to a decent amount of wind, but everything held tight and kept me warm and dry all night. Very satisfied with this purchase
My husband and I both have Hennessy hammocks now I (5ft 6 and 55kg) have the scout symmetrical hammock and my husband (5ft11 and 75kg) has the expedition asymmetrical hammock.
Pros: extremely consistent and comfortable bed every night of your trip. Quick and easy to put up once you know what you are doing. Very mosquito resistant (although this was also a con as by the middle of the evening we both just wanted to be in our hammocks when there were mosquitoes about). Very well made piece of kit - there is no sign of wear at all after a heavy amount of use. Flexible system - can be used with or without rainfly and you can put rainfly angled higher or lower depending on the weather and activities. We also found the hammocks consistent whether hung from trees closer or further away, as long as the bungees were properly tensioned. The velcro entrance worked well and we like the webbing straps that come with the hammocks - it is only a shame they don't also include the snake skins packing bags but we have just used the regular bags that they came with and they have been fine. Hammocks are also pretty dark once you are inside them so it is possible to sleep in if you want to.
Cons: as with all hammocks you need to find a camp site suited to hanging them in. Generally this wasn't a problem at all but just an adjustment in what you are looking for. Our camps felt a lot more discreet and lower impact than if we had a tent that was crushing grass etc. They can be chilly if you haven't got something under you (we now both use lightweight small mats in the hammocks as it can be cool where the sleeping bag is squashed under you eg hips and shoulders), as with all hammocks you are separate from everyone else you are camping with so it limits conversation once you are in the hammocks. Obviously there is some movement side to side when you are in it and so we found it a small adjustment from tents as it can feel like hard work sorting out mats, sleeping bags etc when you are in the hammock particularly when it is dark. Also we slept later than we would normally when camping and so had to set alarms which was unexpected.
We really like our hammocks and would highly recommend these. High quality, worth the investment and a piece of kit which has changed the way we camp and explore.
Very packable, very simple to set up and take down (buy snakeskins, they are worth it)
-set up time is easily under five minutes.
-used it in rather windy rainy mountainsides, stayed pretty dry with everything tied tight.
-it is a great color for stealthy camping
