Product Description

Product Description

For all those who camp, hunt or spend time afield. The Companion works just as happily splitting out kindling as it does prying apart joints and skinning game, not to mention chopping onions for the campfire chili!. Once you secure the knife in the sheath, there is a spot on the back of the sheath where you apply pressure with your thumb to release the knife. The knife locks into place for safety, so it doesn't fall out. This isn't a defect, the user has to apply pressure to a certain spot on the sheath so the knife can actually be removed from it.

A Beefy Workhorse of a Blade
4 Stars
A Beefy Workhorse of a Blade
I bought this knife to make a project of it, as many people in the bushcraft community do. It has a reputation for being damn near indestructible and for powering through wood in any kind of chopping or batoning tasks. I'm happy to report that it lives up to its reputation and then some. Out of the box it isn't really ideal for bushcraft-type use, but a few key mods will get you there. See the pic to get a look at what I did to it. Bought some micarta scales for it ($35, also found on Amazon) and they feel worlds better than the stock zytel ones and grip far better when wet. I added a quick paracord lanyard to keep it secure in the hand when choking back on the handle to chop. Stripped the powder coat below the primary bevel, swapped out the stock nuts and bolts for stainless steel, and also stripped the spine and ground it down a hair to square it off for ferro rod striking. I re-profiled the factory v edge to a convex on a Ken Onion grinder too. I like this edge profile much better for working with wood. Now it's a beast more optimized for woods use.So, the good of it is that it's a beefy, quarter inch thick, one pound hunk of steel in your hand. It makes you feel powerful holding it and it obliterates wood for small to medium camp-type firewood processing tasks. It should be said that it isn't great at the detail work, but that's to be expected of a blade this thick. The bad is the fit and finish out of the box (more my opinion and use-bias here). This is 1095 cro van steel. Debatably a hair better than regular 1095, but at the end of the day it's the same in practical use. Tough as nails and can be beaten to hell without breaking, just ok in edge holding though very easy to sharpen in the field, and very prone to rusting without the proper care. Hence that powder coat. I personally can't stand powder coat on a blade since I use my knives in the woods and a powder coat tends to cause a lot of friction and drag when moving through and against wood. But, if you're going to strip it then you do have to commit to keeping it clean, dry, and oiled or it will rust on you. Also in the bad category (but based on my own opinion and use-bias), I'd put the stock handle scales. The zytel feels smooth and plastic-y and gets slippery when wet. I suspect Becker insists on using them just because they keep cost down. Between the powder coat and zytel handles, fit and finish feels kinda cheap and 'tacticool' out of the box. If that's your thing and you like it, great. Not for me though. At the very least I'd recommend taking a look at those micarta scales I got. Love 'em. Whether you keep the zytel scales or upgrade to the micarta, the handle is equally hand-filling and comfortable at least. Its bulbous, knobby design toward the pommel is excellent for chocking back on the handle and chopping. I will say, on the downside that knob makes certain cuts (chest levers, for instance) rather awkward. Still doable, but it takes getting used to.Finally, on to the ugly: the sheath. It's not a looker, being some sort of injection molded plastic attached to nylon, but my problem with it is with function rather than form. I suspect there might be some sort of glass fiber in the plastic, because I found it was actively dulling my blade. I thought I was going nuts, but after sharpening to a hair-popping edge, the knife would get too dull to shave after nothing more than being sheathed and unsheathed a few times to do very small cutting tasks. Then I read up on it more and found out it's a common, known issue with this sheath. It was also super tight to the point that I really had to fight with it to draw it. That's another known issue. So into the trash it went. I bought an aftermarket leather sheath to replace it.So to conclude, you get a legendary beast of a knife, and the price is pretty good for a one pound hunk of steel. I would, however, plan on spending another $50 or so on an aftermarket sheath for it. The rest of the criticisms I've thrown its way are more my opinion and based on my preference, but the problem with the cheap sheath dulling the edge is inexcusable and not something you can live with. So a full star gets removed for that. Other than that sheath, I love the purchase and would absolutely recommend it.

It's a batoning beast!
Built like a tank and performs like one too.
The sheath is too flimsy when not strapped across the handle. Had to fix that myself. Either buy a better sheath or get creative. Other than that I really enjoy this knife. Money well spent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Für mich: das perfekte Messer!

Klare Kaufempfehlung!

5.0 out of 5 stars BK2 Poderoso e indestructible. (lo mismo que todos dicen)
Reviewed in Mexico on June 18, 2019
