Trays Came Defective but were replaced promptly upon proof of defect and destruction
I ordered the Yakima Hold Up Tray type bike rack for a 2 inch hitch on my Honda CRV. I wanted the security of having the wheels securely held in place unlike those of the "hanging" type of bike racks where the wheels are left hanging in the air and also allowing the handle bars to sway if otherwise not strapped down. I was really looking forward to this Hold Up Tray. I received the Yakima bike rack as promised in two days. I eagerly started the installation when I realized that the bolt holes did not align well with the slots in the hitch piece (see photograph). I thought it was just an issue of shoving the trays into the hitch deeper but no matter how many times I loosened one side and tried to adjust the bolt holes, nothing worked. I contacted Yakima customer service and the guy there (very knowledgeable guy named Greg) asked me to take pictures of the offending parts. I did so and emailed the photos to Yakima support. The next day, I followed up by calling Yakima support again to see what they thought and a nice knowledgeable lady named Deb listened to my problem. Upshot of this call is that they asked me to "field destroy" the offending trays and offer that as proof in another email along with my address and phone number and they would send me replacement trays! Yaay. So, I will follow up and update this review when I receive my replacement trays and try them out. I am impressed with Yakima's customer support phone line and email support. If things work out, I will raise the number of stars on the review to 4 or 5. I am really looking forward to a good resolution of this problem. Update on August 9: Deb from customer support emailed me to say that my replacement trays will be delivered by FEDEX on Saturday (day after tomorrow). Great Service! I'm upping the rating temporarily to 3 stars and if the new delivered trays are within specifications, I will raise the rating again in another update. UPDATE on August 11: Replacement trays came today on time (overnight service). I installed the trays in a few minutes. Amazing how a piece of hardware made off spec can cause so much trouble. Anyway, I'm happy that the trays are now securely installed. I also went ahead and took the new cores out of the tray locks and replaced them with the old locks so I can use the old keys. My alternative would have been to replace the hitch lock with a new lock but that would have cost me an additional $12 (I'm cheap). Now it is just a matter of trying out this baby. Looks very sturdy and wheel trays and adjustable tire arms hooks will keep my carbon bike from handling damage (on the frame) while also securely holding onto my mountain bike with its fatter tires. I'll raise my review rating to 4 stars for now. A future update may likely raise it to 5 stars.
