3M Peltor TEP-100 Tactical Digital Earplug
The 3M Peltor Tactical Digital Earplug helps protect your hearing and helps improve auditory environmental awareness and communications in challenging environments where intermittent loud and impulse noise may be present. This device gives military, municipal, and industrial users a digital earplug with tactical communication, situational awareness, and hearing protection capabilities. Utilizing state-of-the-art, sound level-dependent hearing protection technology, the TEP-100 is a compact, lightweight, and rechargeable digital earplug designed for military, tactical law enforcement, construction, manufacturing, and maintenance applications.
3M Peltor TEP-100 Tactical Digital Earplugs help protect hearing while offering improved auditory environmental awareness over conventional hearing protectors by actively adjusting to loud and soft environmental sounds. These rechargeable digital earplugs can help to improve awareness by amplifying lower volume sounds like voices, while limiting hazardous steady state and impulse noise. The TEP-100 tactical earplugs utilize environmental microphones to detect sounds. These sounds can either be amplified to make them easier for the user to hear in quiet environments, or the sounds can be attenuated (reduced) to help protect the user’s hearing. When using the TEP-100 tactical earplugs, sounds such as warning signals, or approaching vehicles may be easier to hear than when using conventional hearing protection. When exposed to impulse noise, such as gunfire, the TEP-100 earplugs immediately soften sudden loud noises such as the blast of a gun or rifle, making these earplugs an effective hearing protection solution for hunters and gun range shooters, as well as tactical users such as members of armed forces and police officers. These earplugs are designed for intermittent noise environments, where the user must sometimes quickly transition from quiet to potentially hazardous noise. Communicating in quiet and maintaining auditory environmental awareness can be challenging when using conventional hearing protection in quiet and low levels of noise. The tactical earplug is designed for applications where awareness is critical and protection from imminent high level and/or impulse noise is required, such as shooting ranges, construction sites, manufacturing plants, auto racing, transportation, and first responder and law enforcement.
3M Peltor TEP-100 Tactical Earplugs help to increase environmental awareness by offering the user:

Importance of hearing protection
Exposure to loud noises can adversely affect the ability to hear over time. Wearing proper hearing protection devices can help in reducing the harmful effects of noise. Sounds levels are expressed in decibels, often abbreviated as dB. Higher decibel numbers indicate louder sounds. Typical decibel levels associated with common sounds include: outdoors with no people or traffic 20 dB, normal conversation 60 dB, power lawn mower 90 dB, chain saw 110 dB, and 12-gauge shotgun 165 dB. The hearing protector NRR can be used to evaluate different hearing protection options. However, the actual level of protection varies depending on fit, wearing time and other factors.

It is really worth it to get the Skull Screw foam tips if you are using these for shooting. I put the TEP-100's in my ears without turning them on and you can't hear squat, so the foam tips are worth the extra $ IMO.
Turning the units on, I was surprised how well I could hear and that it clamps down noises proportionally. In the Walkers and other active ear protection, it is a very abrupt cutoff. With these, it keeps everything at roughly the same volume level so you can hear everything, but it's kept to a very comfortable level.
I can see what the other reviewer has said about it being a little difficult to determine directionality of sounds with these. When you hear normally, if a sound originates from your right, you can tell where it comes from because your brain can tell that it is louder in your right ear than your left.
The microphones on these earplugs are quite sensitive and they try to keep everything at a constant level. So the slight limitation with these is that if a sound originates on your right, the microphone in your left ear still picks up the sound and amplifies it. So, all noises sound kind of like they are all around you. You can hear things quite well, but it was not that easy to tell which direction it comes from. I could hear people talking 50 yards away.
I think taking stars off for that is a bit harsh. While these are not cheap, they are not the most expensive either and perform quite well and the charging case is compact, robust and well-designed.
Perhaps my only minor nitpick is that the small rubber cap that covers the USB charging port has a somewhat short tether that comes out rather easily, but you can just shove it back in and just remember to not pull in it too hard.
Really like these a lot. They provide the noise protection I need while allowing me to hear things and not get in the way of shooting long guns.
Using the supplied 3M Pelter Skull ear inserts the NRR rating supposed to be 30. I also ordered an extra 10 pack of these since reviews indicated these inserts tend to fall apart quickly. So far I have used the same Skull inserts about 20 times and still look in good shape.
For indoor range, I normally have been using the basic orange foam ear plugs then on top use my Howard Leight Impact Amplified over ear muffs. Indoor ranges generate very high impact sounds and I find only using over ear protection alone is not sufficient. I now have substituted the orange ear plugs with my Pelter Ear plugs (with Skull inserts for max protection) and also use my over ear Howard Leight muffs. Since both are amplified, this combo works great for me and better than just the Orange plugs and muffs. Since my hearing is bad anyway from gun shot exposure when I was in combat duty, the amplified combo works perfectly for me.
For outdoor shooting, these are very comfortable and easy to insert and remove. I did find, as others have noted, that when windy, the Pelter ear plugs do generate a whistling sound and can't hear anything else. This is only slightly annoying and by turning your head to the right or left will ellivate the whistling. While shooting it's not distracting. Only when walking around and talking to someone and the wind picks up then the whistling cuts off hearing the person talking with. Again, just turning your head slightly usually eliminates the whistling.
These Pelter plugs generate beeps after about 2 hrs indicating they are ready to turn off. Simply pushing the on/off button quickly will reset them for another 2hrs. Nice feature.
I've only been using these for 6 months and usually on the range for 6 hours of continuous use and had no loss of battery life and no need to recharge.
There are 2 settings for amplification and my hearing is pretty bad anyway, however, I have only been using the lower normal amification setting and works perfectly for me. I have tried the higher amp setting but found the amplification is more than what I need.
The charging case is very nice feature in that it charges the ear plugs to full level then shuts off when they are fully charged. Since I've only had these for about 6 months, I don't know yet as to how long the AAA charging batteries last but still charging with the original set of batteries I installed.
Needless to say, I'm very happy with these. Would be nice if I could find ear inserts for these that would take the NRR to 32. Every little extra bit of protection is always worthwhile to have.
I will say that it is important to make sure the unit is well placed into the ear canal for max protection. A couple of times I didn't have them all the way in and I could tell I was more sensitive to the impacts of shooting going on. Simply repositioning them firmly into the ear canal solved the noise problem.
UPDATE: I can't believe the positive reviews this product has gotten. The only thing I can imagine is that most users don't use them much. I shoot thousands of rounds annually and rely on good ear pro. As I said originally, these work great... when they work. Right now they are dead in the water. Trying to get a refund is impossible. I am now working on my THIRD TIME sending them back. The poor gal in CS knows me by name.
