Customers are mixed about the stability of the kayak carrier. Some mention that the holders held perfectly, while others say that they started slipping back and forth on the crossbars. The carrier tends to move slightly on the square load bars, and the bars do not slide into each other easily.

Customers are mixed about the straps. Some mention that the strap that came with the racks are great and keep the load secure. Some customers also say that they had to buy other ones that fit the roof rack, and the holes for the bolts did not line up well.

    69 customers mention19 positive50 negative

Customers are dissatisfied with the fit of the transport rack. They mention that the straps given are small, and the mounts were only just barely large enough for their roof racks. The tool that comes with the set only fits the larger bolts, and that the rack does not fit their car well. Customers also say that the top brackets are too small in diameter to fit over their factory bars, and they are unable to use the hardware provided.

"...If I had any complaint it would be that the straps were a little longer...." Read more

"...The only difficulty I had was the mounts were only just barely large enough for the roof racks on my second generation Nissan Xterra...." Read more

"...They went together very easy and everything fit as they should. The only issue I have had with these racks in general is the foam isn't very durable...." Read more

"...tricky to put together since the instructions ARE TERRIBLE, and such small print that you cant even read them...." Read more

    21 customers mention3 positive18 negative

Customers are dissatisfied with the tightness of the transport rack. They mention that it's hard to keep tighten during transportation, the bolts are difficult to tighten with the bare hand, and it doesn't clamp well to round Yakama bars. Additionally, some customers report that the carrier to the crossbars would not secure into place and the straps break.

"...securely tighten each side down, one of the nuts jump threads and loosens way up...." Read more

"...product is that the knobs that actually provide the clamping pressure are difficult to tighten with the bare hand...." Read more

"...being completely secured (and resecured) and regularly checked, it comes loose and has bent out of shape...." Read more

"...My only worry is the plastic nuts that hold them in place and the nylon straps that hold them in the folded position...." Read more

    20 customers mention0 positive20 negative

Customers are dissatisfied with the durability of the transport rack. They mention that the foam ripped after just one use, the strap that came with it ripped, and the rubber on them ripped. One of the bars broke while they were driving 45 mph, and one of their kayaks flew off the rack. The metal is weak and the foam is not very durable. The black twist caps snapped in half and the covering is ripping off the metal already.

"...The foam is not thick and one time use the foam tore and I had to put black duck tape around to prevent it from falling off. See pics...." Read more

"...We used them twice and on the second trip the strap broke in half (likely from the teeth on the clamp) going down the road causing our two kayaks to..." Read more

"...The Foam padding may wear out over time but the highend name brands have the same issue. Its an easy fix." Read more

"The protective foam is falling apart, the plastic fasteners broke immediately. These racks work well but they have some junky components." Read more

As far as the alignment of the holes in the other brackets they were all fine and everything went together easily with no modifi
I ordered these on 4/18 and though they said that they would be delivered in mid-May, they arrived 3 days. I opened the box and started to assemble them and wondered why so many others had trouble putting them together. The instructions are minimal but they contain all of the info needed - with the parts numbered so you know which nuts go where etc. and the exploded view diagram - there is not much to assemble. A couple of taps with a rubber mallet helped slide the two haves together when needed. I took the shorter half, slipped on the rubber sleeve, leaving the end exposed that need to slide into the longer half. Then inserted it into the longer half, moved the rubber sleeve back until the holes lined up then slid the bolts in and put the plates on the bottom. I haven't yet attached them to my Sienna roof rack cross bars but I checked to see that the bolts won't touch the roof when they are bolted on the rack. The reason I haven't attached them to the roof rack is because one tube on one of the shorter pieces doesn't have all of the holes drilled. One tube has the holes top and bottom of the tube and the other has just the square holes that hold the bolt head while the round holes on the other side of the tube for the bolt to come through the bar are missing. This was two sets for $41.00 so that means four J bars. Each J bar comes in two pieces - a smaller half and a larger half. One of the four smaller halves didn't have the bolt holes on both sides of one of the tubes.. See the picture. It's not a big deal as I can drill the missing holes but that is why I gave them 4 stars instead of 5. As far as the alignment of the holes in the other brackets they were all fine and everything went together easily with no modifications just this one shorter half of one J bar was missing the holes on one side of one tube..

Built a custom rack on my trailer and needed a couple of kayak holders for my kayaks. As you can see from the pictures I mounted them to a 2X4 instead of a car roof rack. I had to buy a longer bolts to hold on the bottom plates of the holders but other than that no modifications. This last weekend I hauled the trailer over 80 miles taking my kayaks to the lake and back. The kayak holders held perfectly. They are sturdy and the straps did not loosen in transit. If I had any complaint it would be that the straps were a little longer. On the front skinny end of the kayaks the straps are plenty long enough, but on the back end which is wider the straps struggle to make it all they way around the boat. I would but definitely buy these kayak holders again.

Got these for my Subaru and Sun Dolphin Aruba 10. Have not tried them because the weather in WI is snowing. Had a February thaw 50 degrees so we put them on and put the kayak on top and drove 60 miles per hour. The straps did very well and held the kayak tightly. Did not rattle or get noisy. I did not even know the kayak was not top. Went together easily. We were missing one locking nut, but had extra washers and regular nuts. Pleased with purchase for the price. The foam is not thick and one time use the foam tore and I had to put black duck tape around to prevent it from falling off. See pics. Went on rack very well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great value for the $
Reviewed in the United States on May 9, 2017
The value on these racks can't be beat. Shipment was fast. All hardware was present, and they go together just fine if you have ANY mechanical aptitude. For assembly, use a real wrench or ratchet, included stamped one sucks (13mm or most 1/2" will work). Buy some real ratchet straps. I wouldn't trust the included ones at highway speeds though I never tried. This is my second pair of racks. After running the first set a year, I wanted to add a set to another vehicle so my wife and I can drop off and pick up down the river without taking the racks with us.

-Fits GMC Acadia OEM crossbars great.
-Fits the 1x2" fabricated aluminium racks on my Jeep Commander beautifully.
-1.25" fabricated round bars on my Jetta not so great as they like to rotate- welder to the rescue lol.
-Coating will chalk with sun exposure- who cares?
-They will rust inside the tubes eventually - it's mild steel, steel does that - who cares? Leave them on upright, or store inside to minimize.
-For around $75 (less if you watch them) I have racks on both my SUVs to haul 2 kayaks each!
