Now was the real test, The hike. As expected it dropped in the low 20s for the night. I started out in my underarms cold gear to sleep in. I ended up coming out of it and sleeping in my underwear. I got hot in it. I slept like a baby it in. As i woke up in the morning. I found dew dripping down from the ceiling of the tent and onto my bag. My bag got a bit wet but as it advertises, it's waterproof and tear resistant. Is was perfectly dry and warm. Best sleeping bag I purchased. Now it isn't no down bag but it worked perfect for me and met all my expectations. If I could pick out one flaw, it would be the weight. Just a bit more than what I wanted at like 4 to 4.5 pounds. But this bag was well worth it and I would recommend it to anyone.
By the way. My cousin bought this same bag after he tried mine out. He is 6 foot and 320 pounds. Quit a bit bigger than me. He said it was a bit tight but after he got zipped up it felt like a mummy bag would and perfect leg length and slept good. Thanks Teton for a great product
First, the bags are fairly light at just 2lb 9 oz. Great for weekend backpackers. They also compress nicely in the sack they came with, but would do so even more if you bought a compression bag. However, they easily fit in the bottom sleeping bag compartment of our backpacks as is. The sack also has a strap on one end so you can easily attach it to the outside of your pack.
The bag is warm, and it's important to remember that sleeping bag ratings are for SURVIVAL and assume you're properly dressed for the weather you're using the bag in--dry base layer or naked, hat, etc. This bag should keep you comfortable at 40F and above if you're properly dressed/dry. If you go to bed in the same clothes you've been wearing all day, you'll get cold in any sleeping bag--always put on clean, dry clothes or sleep naked with a hat. :) If you're worried about warmth, you can easily add a lightweight fleece mummy bag liner--it won't add much weight to your pack, and the extra warmth can be reassuring if you need it.
I'm recovering from thyroid cancer and have gained 80lbs, so even as a plus size women at 5'10, 250 lbs, I have plenty of room to zip up and around me so that the bag isn't cold. I'm a side sleeper and I move around a lot at night, but I don't try to roll IN the bag--I roll with the bag. The cinch hood is a nice feature for a bag at this price.
Overall, yes, there are lighter and warmer backpacking bags--but for this price point, you'd be hard pressed to find one as warm, light, and soft as this one. If you're a beginner or just do 1-2 night trips from spring, summer, early fall, this bag should exceed your expectations. Add a lightweight fleece liner and you'll be set for even cooler temps. Teton never disappoints.
We would buy this bag again in a heartbeat and we recommend it unreservedly. A great value.
Top reviews from other countries
I highly recommend this sleeping bag for people that don't want to spend a fortune and get value instead. It is exceptionally well made. As with any sleeping bag be sure to store it out of its storage bag and hang it up or lay it on a spare room bed to retain its loft until your next camping trip, the bag will last for years. I don't regret buying it. Value in this case does not mean compromise. I have had this sleeping bag for years and its still the one I use. I would not hesitate to buy again. Teton makes great products.
You will NOT be comfortable at 20F/-7C with this sleeping bag, in fact you'd be far too cold to sleep. However, with thermal underwear, warm socks, a beanie (or head covering of some sort), a quality sleeping pad, and inside of a 4-season tent, I've used this sleeping bag in sub-zero temperatures without any real issues. That being said, anything below freezing is uncomfortable, even with the above mentioned gear. Just remember not to open it once you settle in for the night, or you'll lose a lot of heat...
In terms of comfort (which highly depends on the individual), I'd say it's "acceptable" down to around 32F/0C (while wearing the aforementioned cold weather gear), and warm or "comfortable" down to around 40F/5C (with the mentioned gear). The 20F/-7C rating is likely the "survivable" temperature, at which you would be very uncomfortable and likely unable to sleep due to the cold, but not die from hypothermia. I've also used it in warmer temperatures by simply reducing what I wear while sleeping, and leaving the bag unzipped.
Overall it's a quality sleeping bag, light weight, and offers much better size/warmth performance of any sleeping bag anywhere near the price. I've used mine for a number of years now and recently bought two more for friends, as it is better than anything found in German stores for anywhere near the price.
Highly recommended for backpackers/trekkers who don't plan to sleep in temperatures much colder than 40F/5C (unless you have additional quality cold weather gear). A compression sack is necessary to further reduce the size; my medium sea-to-summit compression sack holds my sleeping bag, inflatable pillow, thermal underwear, beanie, gloves, warm socks, and a few other soft/compressible items, yet is still smaller than the sleeping bag is without a compression sack). As for a compression sack, I recommend Sea to Summit, as I've had mine for years and never had any issues.
